  • Marijuana

    [mar-uh-wah-nuh]

Cannabis, commonly known as marijuana and by numerous other names, is a preparation of the hemp plant intended for use as a psychoactive drug and in some states as medicine (though it is not FDA-approved medication). It can be smoked or eaten in edible format. It is the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States. It is particularly harmful to the teenage brain.
  • Weed

    [weed]

Weed is a "slang" term for marijuana that most likely comes from "Mexican locoweed," a derogatory term for the marijuana brought over by Mexican immigrants in the early 1900s. It can be smoked or eaten in edible format.
  • Pot

    [pot]

Pot is a "slang" term for marijuana. The term pot came into use in America in the late 1930s. It is a shortening of the Spanish potiguaya or potaguaya that came from potacin de guaya, a wine or brandy in which marijuana buds have been steeped. It literally means the drink of grief. That said, pot (interchangeable with the term weed) is smoked or eaten.
